Fathers Day Drags

November issue of NZV8 Magazine on sale now!

October 3rd, 2011 by NZV8

The November issue of NZV8 Magazine has just hit shop shelves so it’s time to get a fresh fix of all that’s happening on the kiwi V8 scene. The new issue is a beaut and comes packed with feature cars, news and event reports so get your copy before they are all gone.

In this month’s issue we have an epic cover article that celebrates high power Fords. There’s a 1970 Ford Torino Type N/W cover car that’s immaculately finished and uses a 514ci big block motor to produce 700hp plus. If the Torino wasn’t enough this V8 lover also has a late model FPV GT-P daily driver with 413kW on tap – that makes for a high horsepower garage. Other feature cars include a beautifully chromed 1957 Chevy Bel Air which is simply stunning inside and out. There’s also a ’72 Dodge Challenger finished in slime green and packing a 528ci motor it can achieve 9-second passes. No issue would be complete without a Chev Camaro and this months is a classic 1969 RS/SS model with a 410ci small block engine and a track-spec fit out. Away from the feature cars we have a article celebrating kiwi automotive success stories and we visit a huge private collection of Packards and motorbikes. We report back from the recent Pukekohe Hot Rod and Horsepower Show and also the annual Father’s Day Drags.

All this plus the usual technical advice, readers’ rides, posters and news to keep you up to date with all that’s happening on the NZ V8 scene. This is a stellar issue so make sure you pick up a copy today before they sell out!

The annual Petrolhead Fathers’ Day Drags is the biggest and fastest street car meet on the local drag racing calendar and it’s all on for this Sunday (Sept 5) at the Fram Autolite Dragway, Meremere.

Hosted by the American Muscle Car Club, it’s always well run and has become a must attend event, not just for dads but for everyone. There’s also a Thrill Performance top 8 shootout and, of course, a burnout comp because who doesn’t dig a big smokey burnout on a Sunday afternoon?

The competition has really heated up over the last few years, and we know there are a few drivers who are going to fight hard for this year’s title.

If you attend only one drag race meet this year, the Fathers’ Day Drags should be it.

Entry is $20 with kids under 12 rolling in for free. Gates open from 7am and qualifying begins at 10am.

Dads kept happy at Fathers Day Drags – 12 images

September 8th, 2009 by NZV8

The Annual Petrolhead Fathers Day Drags is one of the biggest events on the racing calendar, and this year’s event was a cracker. Reece Fish’s ’56 Chev was touted as the car to beat in the pre event hype, and that turned out to be with just cause. After driving to the track, Reece’s fist pass was a 9.0 at a sideways 120mph. With the next fastest qualifier Aaron Costello running a 9.84 @139.

Out of the Australian produced cars, it was always going to be a battle between Mike Black, his brother Kelvin and Aaron Jenkins. Mike chose to run the slower of his two cars, a wild looking HQ ute, and give Kelvin his 9-second VR Commodore. After qualifying though, Mike took the VR back, and ended up taking out Aaron in the finals.

The American finals was a battle of NZV8 foum members, Reece Fish and Bruce ‘BlackRat’ Cox. Bruce’s smaller tyred Camaro giving in to the big tyred ’56 Chev 9.34@149mph to 8.54@168.2.

Reece Fish ramps up the horsepower on ’50 SIX’

August 20th, 2009 by NZV8

Reece Fish’s well known ‘50 SIX’ ’56 Chev sedan currently holds the title of fastest street car in the country. However this hasn’t stopped him from wanting to go even faster. After major traction issues, Reece decided it was time for the car to be tubbed. C&M Performance got the task of chopping the rear end out of the car and replacing the stock chassis with an Alston chassis clip. The new chassis and diff setup have allowed the car to run Top Fuel type double beadlock wheels, which give it more than twice its previous footprint.

This in itself should be enough for the car to better its current pb of 8.37@ 166mph, but Reece has also decided to add more power. Before the annual Petrolhead Fathers Day Drags, the car will have its 538ci engine rebuilt with new heads and the FAST ECU retuned in an attempt to create around 2000hp. Not bad for a street car huh?

Check out some pics from the rebuild in the gallery below.
