Team Vodafone never kept it a secret that they were less than impressed when Ford decided to drop their funding in the V8 Supercar series. What Ford perhaps didn’t expect was that the reigning champions would switch their allegiance to Holden. Announced yesterday by Holden, that is exactly what is set to happen for the 2010 season.
It’s a big call, shifting Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes from the vehicles they have been having such success in, to new unknown combinations. No doubt other V8 Supercar teams are happy with the news, as it may spell the end of a very long winning streak by the Team Vodafone drivers.
“Personally, I am very excited, I started my V8 Supercar career in Holden teams and didn’t quite get the results I wanted so now I have the chance to rectify that,” Whincup said. “Triple Eight is a cohesive and dedicated team and I am very confident that we can continue to record similar results when we climb aboard our new Commodores to start the 2010 season. “I look forward to working with Holden and hope that we can shoot for further championship success together.”
The decision to swap racing marques was assisted by the lapse of Lowndes’ deal with Ford at the end of the year, and comes after the four-time Bathurst winner and Whincup extended their contracts with Triple Eight until 2012.
