I had found a couple of electric fans from previous cars and gathered the necessary mounting bracketry, it was time to call Clint and get some wiring from the fans routed to the shifter surround plate mounted switch.. I yanked the factory clutch fan setup and shroud, an extremely efficient unit which had seen some heated situations and made it through a few trackdays and race weekends, and gathered the fans and figured on where I’d mount them.. one was a 14 inch and one was a 10 inch.. the 14 was front mounted on my old VP wagon for air-con, the 10 was one of a pair off a VH sedan I scored.. I mounted the 14 up front behind the trans cooler and the 10 is nestled up near the radiator outlet, if I could’ve fitted the pair I would have and set them up as an independent fan to the 14, but there’s no room to do that just yet, however these fans are anything but permanent and they have been fitted more as an experiment to investigate function before form is settled upon..
Clint sent his right hand man over and he wired the fans up to the relay and also a master over-ride switch.. they make a cool as whirring noise
I like whirring noises
he surveyed his handiwork and on his way out the driveway he said “make sure they work, keep an eye on the guage for the first couple of days”
the past couple of days I have driven the family car around I have made it a point to switch on the fans around 200 – 210 F regardless of what I see.. I let her run up to 220F today but was concerned over traffic so switched the fans on, result was a 30F drop in temp and she settled back around 190F while the fans stayed on dropping to 160F when the thermostat opened and the cooler rad water went into the block.. I am genuinly happy at this stage and will leave them running for a while on Sunday I am sure.. only prob at this stage is that the key has to be turned to on to get the fans running whereas I am always wary of leaving the key to on for any prolonged period in case my coil gets cooked..
Sunday is nearing.. time to get some spares and gear together to take along.. won’t need much one tub and one spare tyre should do it this time.. fill the tub with the trolley jack, the tools, the spares and some bottled water and food for the day, one spare tyre should be enough though..
