the family car – now what!!??!!

so I’m out having some fun  in the car with my daughter Stefanee, who quietly smiles when we’re giving the family car heaps. Traditionally when things go wrong with the car Stefanee is in the passenger seat, flat tyre, run out of petrol, flat battery, nose to tail in a carpark, engine failure and even a blown head gasket.. she’s been there for them all.. so when the car spluttered as we approached the Wainui hill I was a little more than concerned as I turned and glanced at her in the passenger seat.. there was plenty of 95 in the tank but there was definitely some sort of problem.. she kept going and when we started to climb the hill she spluttered a little but kept going, on the way down she just ran against the trans and there was a steady engine note.. as we rolled through the main stretch of Wainuiomata Rd towards the mall I held the pedal steady and listened while I explained the issue to Stefanee..

the idle fluttered like she was running on 7 cylinders from time to time, combined with the gasping sounds of fuelling up as well.. I drove for a while just to see if it was the fuel pump and if it would simply fail and we would have to tow the family car home.. When we got home I had a look at the vacuum hoses under the bonnet and sat down to think more about this problem..

I’m thinking the fuel filter is blocked, or the fuel pick-up is fouled with some debris in the bottom of the tank, or there is shit rolling around in the bottom of the tank being drawn to the pickup.. I am hoping that it isn’t the fuel pump, though if it is so be it a new one was always wanted after we swapped in the 5.0litre..

the brief period I had the car running after the alternater was re-installed prior to this latest issue, was pretty eye opening in terms of strength in accelleration and speed of accelleration.. I am really looking forward to the final round at Masterton in April when we can hopefully set ourselves a new fastest ET and MPH..

so now I am going to sort out a new filter to start with, then I may look into removing the tank and having an optic-nerve inside for any debris.. if it needs a clean out then that’s what it will get.. got 5 weeks to get her sorted for the finale at MMP.. we gotta be there for what may be the final meeting they get to run there..

as an aside one time when we had a VL sedan Stefanee and I were out for a drive around the picturesque Pauatahanui Inlet Rd when we approached a lovely right hander and accidentally drifted the rear end out a little as we rounded said right hander.. a little noise, some smoke and (in my opinion) pretty good form too.. so I was a little taken aback by the police man in his flash as VY Commodore who asked me to pull over and explain what I was doing.. as I am talking the policeman keeps looking at Stefanee who was sitting there just listening to her Dad telling the story, after he had a thorough look over the wof’d and reg’d car he returned to the car and he asked if Stefanee has anything to say about it??.. all she did was smile sweetly and say she liked driving around with her Dad, at which the policeman smiles at her, stands up, tells me not to get the car sideways, at least not while I am in Porirua anyways, and send us on our way.. this isn’t the only time my daughter has saved me from a potentially expensive ticket.. if I had been on my own I would have been in some trouble but with my little girl riding shotgun we were given some discretionary treatment..
